Ghanian Author killed in Kenya attack

Ghanian Author, who is also one of the African's finest Professor Awoonor Kofi was unfortunate to be one of the victims of the deadly Kenya mall attack on Saturday.


The talented Writer who was recently made the chairman, Ghana state council was in westgate shopping mall Nairobi, with his son when the massacre which sent shock news around the world took place. however, a source at the Ghana high commission based in Nairobi confirmed Awoonor's death while it was reported that his son sustained injuries but he is currently responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, in the light of the deadly terror that was unleashed on Kenya, an islamist millitant group named Al Shabab claimed responsibility for this wicked act that has left 59 people dead and many degrees of critical injuries so far.

A source at Legon told SaharaReporters that Mr. Awoonor’s death “has put Ghanians in a big mourning mood. He was a very beloved man, an honorable writer who believed in lifting up all Ghanians.”

The Author was born on March 13, 1935, Had his basic Educations in Ghana before proceeding to the University in London and the United States. Mr. Awoonor speaks languages like English, Spanish, French and Portuguese in addition to his native language. He held several positions including Head of the Ghana Film Corporation. He taught at universities in the US, the University of Ghana in Legon, and the University of the Cape Coast where he was head of the Department of English.

Mr. Awoonor was a gifted writer and passionate promoter of African literature through his critical scholarship. His book of criticism, The Breast of the Earth, is widely regarded as an important foundational text in the appreciation of the links between the oral tradition in Africa and the continent’s modern literary traditions, He indeed was a well talented man.

As of now, no source has been able to confirm if the deceased was on an official mission in Kenya. meanwhile the Ghana government describe his death as a tragedy and the president also sent his condolence to the Awoonor family.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has also vowed to hunt down the perpetrators of the attack and warned that his administration will not in any means give in to terrorists.
